Liyu Lake

A calm lake surrounded by forest and gentle cycling paths, popular with families and birdwatchers. It is a peaceful counterpoint to the drama of the gorge.

The visit

The flat loop makes this an easy half-day for families and casual cyclists. Stop often: the lakeside path moves between forest, farms and quiet viewpoints. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars, especially in the early morning.

History and context

Liyu means Carp Lake, and this is the largest lake in eastern Taiwan. It sits below Liyu Mountain and has long been a local spot for cycling, birdwatching and family outings.

The lake has long been used for fishing and irrigation by the surrounding communities. In the post-war decades it became a leisure area, and the lakeside path and cultural displays now reflect both its working past and its role as a weekend escape.
