Qingshui Cliff

A towering wall of marble and green rock plunging into layered blue sea, one of the most photographed stretches of the Suhua Highway. The viewpoint is a short stop on the coastal road.

The visit

This is a drive-and-stop experience rather than a single viewpoint. Pull over at the marked lay-bys and watch the sea change colour against the marble cliffs. Allow extra time for photos and for the occasional tunnel or roadworks.

History and context

The cliff runs for more than 20 kilometres along the Suhua Highway, where the Philippine Sea plate meets the Eurasian plate. Its marble and green rock walls drop almost vertically into the Pacific.

The Suhua Highway was carved into the cliff by hand during the Japanese era, and many workers died building it. The old road is still visible in places, while the newer route tunnels through the rock to keep the coast connected.
