The visit
Wulai is a place to soak, walk and eat rather than rush between sights. The hot springs and waterfall are the anchors, but the Atayal culture and river setting make the village worth a full afternoon. Bring a towel and cash for the baths.
History and context
Wulai is an Atayal mountain village south of Taipei, known for hot springs and a tall waterfall. Japanese-era bathhouses first developed it as a resort.
Wulai means ‘hot water’ in the Atayal language, and the Atayal have lived in this valley for generations. Japanese-era bathhouses turned it into a resort, while the waterfall and indigenous culture kept it distinct from other hot-spring towns.
