The visit
Give yourself time to walk the whole cape, not just photograph the Queen’s Head. The rock formations change with the light and the tide, and the boardwalks keep you close to the sea. Bring a hat and water; there is little shade.
History and context
Wind, sea and earthquakes have carved this sandstone cape into hoodoo rocks, including the famous Queen’s Head. The formations are a compact lesson in Taiwan’s coastal geology.
The sandstone here was lifted from the sea floor and then shaped by wind, rain and salt for thousands of years. The Queen’s Head is expected to erode away eventually, which is why the park uses boardwalks and rangers to protect the formations.
