History and context
Toyo Ito’s opera house opened in 2016 with a curving, cave-like interior. It quickly became one of Taiwan’s most recognisable contemporary buildings.
The theatre was part of Taichung’s push to create a cultural district in the former gateway area. Toyo Ito’s design was chosen through an international competition, and the building opened in 2016 as a symbol of the city’s ambitions.
