Day by day
The plan
This is the easiest way to see a different side of Taipei: no traffic, wide river views and a string of small parks, temples and old riverside settlements.
The route is flat enough for almost anyone, but the afternoon headwind on the way north can be strong. Start early, keep the distance flexible and let the ferry do the hardest part.
Day 1
Dadaocheng to Tamsui
A mostly flat 35–45 km route on dedicated riverside paths. Use a YouBike or rent a city bike, and stop whenever something looks interesting.
Breakfast in Dadaocheng
Start with warm soy milk and a scallion pancake near Dihua Street, then pick up a bike at a nearby YouBike station.
Daqiaotou MRT
Dihua Street & the riverside
Walk the old merchant street before the shops get busy, then join the riverside path at Dadaocheng Wharf.
Guandu Nature Park
A short detour to the wetland boardwalks and bird hides. The path then continues north across the Guandu plain.
Lunch in Tamsui
Lock the bike near the old street and eat at a seafood stall or a noodle shop. Try the iron eggs and fish balls.
Tamsui Historic District
Climb to Fort San Domingo and Oxford College for harbour views, then follow the waterfront back to the bike path.
Ferry to Bali
Take the ferry across the river with your bike for a small surcharge, then ride the quieter left-bank path.
Sunset over the estuary
Watch the sun drop behind the Guanyin hills, then ride back to Tamsui or catch the MRT from Bali.
