Day by day
The plan
Taroko is not a single hike but a whole valley of trails. This route keeps the big permit hike in the middle and uses easier river walks on either side, so tired legs still get a good day.
The park is still recovering from earthquakes and typhoons in places. Flexibility matters: if Zhuilu is closed, swap in the Lushui or Baiyang trails and save the ridge for another trip.
Day 1
Arrive and walk the gorge floor
Take the morning train, then ease into Taroko with two of its easiest and most dramatic river trails.
Train to Hualien
Sit on the left for ocean views. From Hualien station, take a bus or taxi to the Taroko visitor centre.
Shakadang Trail
A gentle riverside path beneath marble cliffs, with clear water and a few short tunnels. Allow two hours.
Lunch in Tianxiang
Take the shuttle to Tianxiang for a simple lunch and a look at the pagoda and suspension bridge.
Baiyang Trail
A flat walk through tunnels to the Baiyang waterfall and its hanging bridge. Bring a torch or use your phone light.
Qixingtan Beach
Return to Hualien for the pebble beach and the last light over the Pacific.
Hualien Night Market
Grilled seafood, indigenous barbecue and a cold drink to finish the day.
Day 2
Zhuilu Old Trail
The big day: a permit-only trail high above the gorge, followed by the classic road-side viewpoints.
Early shuttle to Yanzikou
Zhuilu starts near the Yanzikou trailhead. Bring your permit, passport and enough water for four to five hours.
Climb to the ridge
The trail switchbacks steeply through forest before emerging onto the narrow cliff path. The exposure is real; take your time.
Zhuilu viewpoint
The final section looks straight down into the gorge. Turn around before the crowds and afternoon cloud arrive.
Swallow Grotto
Walk the short roadside trail through the marble tunnels and look up at the cliffs above the Liwu River.
Tunnel of Nine Turns
A gentle paved trail along one of the gorge's tightest bends, with views of the river far below.
Dinner in Hualien
Return to the city for a seafood dinner or a bowl of noodles near the night market.
Day 3
Lushui, cliffs and the coast
A quieter morning on the Lushui trail, then the coast road back to Hualien.
Lushui Trail
A short forest and cliff trail with views of the gorge and the old road. Check for closures after rain.
Yanzikou and the Liwu River
Spend a little more time at the river viewpoints before leaving the park.
Lunch in Xincheng
Stop in Xincheng for a simple meal and a look at the small coastal town.
Qingshui Cliff viewpoint
The highway viewpoint looks over the sheer marble cliffs and the layered blue of the Pacific.
Back to Hualien
Return to the city in time for the train, or stay another night for the coast.
