Zhuilu Old Trail

A vertiginous cliff-edge trail with a narrow path and chains, high above the gorge. The views are extraordinary, but it requires a permit and a head for heights.

The visit

This is the gorge at its most dramatic, with a narrow path cut into the cliff and a sheer drop below. The permit and early start are part of the experience, so plan ahead and check trail conditions. It is not for anyone uneasy with heights.

History and context

The trail was cut into the cliff during the Japanese era for military and trade routes. Reopened to permit-holding hikers, it is famous for its narrow path above a sheer drop into the gorge.

The trail was part of a Japanese military road built in 1914 to control the Truku villages in the gorge. It was closed for years after landslides and reopened with a permit system, preserving a dramatic piece of colonial-era engineering.
