The visit

Maobitou is a short, scenic stop on the west coast, best at sunset. The coral cliffs and sea caves are small but dramatic, and the cat-shaped rock is a fun photo. Combine it with a seafood dinner nearby.

History and context

Maobitou is a coral-limestone headland named for a rock that resembles a crouching cat. Its caves and cliffs were shaped by coral uplift and sea erosion.

The headland is made of uplifted coral, evidence that this coast was once under the sea. Its name comes from a rock resembling a cat, and the surrounding waters have long supported fishing families.
