The lake loop by bike
A 30-kilometre cycle path circles the lake, passing through tunnels of trees, tea farms and waterfront villages. The section between Shuishe and Xiangshan is especially beautiful.

The visit
Cycling the lake is the best way to see how the landscape changes around the water. The full loop takes several hours, but shorter sections are just as rewarding. Start early to avoid the heat and the tour buses.
History and context
The 30-kilometre lakeside route has been called one of the world’s most beautiful bike paths. It passes Thao villages, temples and tea farms around Sun Moon Lake.
Sun Moon Lake was dammed during the Japanese era to generate hydroelectric power, raising the water level and changing the shoreline. The modern cycle path follows that new edge, passing villages and temples that were rebuilt after the flooding.
