The visit
Wenwu is a grand, ceremonial temple with a superb position above the lake. Walk through the halls, then step outside for the view across the water. It is busiest in the middle of the day, so early morning is calmer.
History and context
Wenwu Temple is dedicated to Confucius and the gods of literature and war. The present complex was rebuilt in 1969 after the original was flooded, and it looks out over the lake.
The original temple stood closer to the water and was flooded when the lake was raised. The present complex was rebuilt in 1969 on higher ground, combining Confucian, Taoist and Buddhist elements in one ceremonial site.
