The visit
Shennong Street is a place to wander in the evening, when the wooden houses light up. Stop for tea, look into the small shops and enjoy the quiet between the bars. It is short, so pair it with nearby streets.
History and context
Shennong Street was once a busy commercial lane in the Five Channels area. Its restored wooden shophouses now hold cafés, tea rooms and small craft shops.
The street was part of the Five Channels area, a commercial quarter that flourished in the Qing and Japanese eras. After a period of decline, its wooden shophouses were restored and reopened as cafés, tea rooms and small shops.
