The visit
The temple is a calm, dignified place, especially in the morning. Walk the courtyard, look at the old trees and imagine the scholars who studied here. It is a good counterpoint to Tainan’s busier sights.
History and context
Founded in 1665, this is the oldest Confucian temple in Taiwan. It served as a centre of learning and still hosts ceremonies in its calm courtyard.
The temple was founded in 1665 by Zheng Jing, Koxinga’s son, as part of the new regime’s promotion of Confucian learning. It served as a school and ceremonial centre and remains one of Tainan’s most important historic sites.
