The visit
Weiwuying is worth visiting even without a ticket, for the architecture and the public park. Walk under the canopy, climb to the rooftop and see how the building sits in the landscape. Check the programme for a performance that fits your evening.
History and context
Weiwuying opened in 2018 on the site of a former military camp. Mecanoo’s vast white canopy covers a park and several theatres, making it one of the world’s largest performing-arts centres.
The site was a military camp for decades, first under the Japanese and later the Taiwanese army. Mecanoo’s design preserved the camp’s grid in the surrounding park, turning a closed site into a public cultural landscape.
